On opening night Lopatkina was the ballet’s reigning queen, dancing the principal role with royal grandeur and wonderful élan. An assured partner and attractive dancer, Yevgeny Ivanchenko was her noble escort.

Bouder’s greatest strength as a dancer is her prodigious musicality, integrity and honesty in interpretation. If she must act, she can do both tragic and heroic well and her Vision scene in Beauty, ballasted by her seemingly innate emotional understanding of tragedy, was lovely.
